For most commercial turf—hotel grounds, campuses, sports facilities—once a year in early spring or early autumn is sufficient. Very high‑traffic or thatch‑prone lawns may benefit from a light pass twice a year, but aggressive scarifying more frequently can stress the grass and slow recovery.

Light surface moisture is fine, but avoid scarifying when the ground is water‑logged or after heavy rain: blades tear rather than cut, the machine skids, and the lawn is prone to rutting. Work when the soil is just damp and the grass is dry enough that debris lifts cleanly.

Will scarifying or aerating damage newly laid turf? Yes, both operations can uproot immature roots. Wait until new turf has been established for at least one full growing season (typically 6–12 months) before the first light pass.

Overseed the same day while grooves are still open, then top‑dress and apply a balanced fertiliser within 24 hours. This speeds recovery and fills any bare patches.

If you manage formal grounds where debris must be cleared quickly, a built‑in collector reduces cleanup time. On large rough areas, side‑discharge can be faster, followed by a separate sweep or mow‑and‑collect pass.

What depth should scarifier blades reach? For standard annual maintenance, set blades to cut 2–4 mm into the turf. Deeper than 6 mm is reserved for major renovation work and can require longer recovery.

How does aeration frequency differ from scarifying? Lawns on heavy, compacted soils may need aeration two to four times a year, whereas scarifying once is usually enough. Aeration can be scheduled more flexibly (spring, mid‑season, late autumn) because it is less disruptive to the sward.
